Vinney White on NewsTalk 1010 in Toronto

Is it just me or is North-American radio now worse than ever?

Call me cynical. Call me a man that is fed up with the endless circle of cheese and insincerity in radio. Radio is worse than ever in it's newly-found desperation to stay relevant and cool in a changing world. It's scared, and it shows. Here's an average snippet from Down-with-the-kids FM:

"That's the new (not-new-to-you, and anyway, we played it an hour ago) awesome track from [insert a teenager affiliated with disney here] - awesome! Coming up, what do you think [insert a teenager affiliated with disney here] should do with her hair?! Tell us on our Facebook page (although I don't care - I am now only doing this to pay for my children's clothes, this job has no creativity anymore), and please, please 'like us' (or our sponsors will realize the radio medium is dying because our target audience isn't listening - ironically, because they are busy on Facebook) - awesome!"

There is another way!

Vinney White, live on Toronto's excellent NewsTalk 1010.
Come and get it!

2013 News & Happy New Year.

Hello you lovely person you.
Not entirely sure how life is jetting by with such speed, but I am mostly enjoying the ride.

Update: Live in Toronto, run a design company that is doing OK. Will be back on a radio in 2013, but the details are still hazy. It has to be the right thing or there's no point. Anyone can shout "Coming up, the awesome Rhianna, then it's time to find out your favourite cake; get in touch on our awesome Facebook page and tell us what cake you like. I like chocolate, it's awesome. Here's the awesome Justin Bieber on Whatever FM".

Meanwhile, get stuck in to one of my new-music podcasts here: www.theneverhour.com

020: The Never Hour (music you never get to hear). September Electronic Special

Talk podcast from Toronto soon... meanwhile:

It's time to do a brand new one hour mix of current and past amazing electronic tracks. Three of my own remixes appear here. If you calculate the time it took to make those tracks, and then add all this lot and mix them up, this one hour of music took me about 100 hours to make. Yes, the Above & Beyond remix took 40 hours alone. I'm not moaning... it's a labour of musical love.

Hit the Facebook button (bottom of post) to share. Why not leave a comment there too?

Ottawa

Bob FM listener to me: "Sorry things didn't work out for you in Ottawa".

Me: I got my dream job, improved the ratings in the evening show by doubling them, bought a house, met some great life-long friends, became a permanent resident of Canada, set up an successful incorporated design agency and travelled Peru, Australia and Africa. Yes, I got fired and it hurt like a slap in the face from a large-handed lunatic but screw it, I was going mental there anyway. Toronto next.

A week left in Ottawa. THANK YOU to Ottawa and every one of it's 900,000 residents for making life here so warm & special. And oddly, an extra special thank you to Bob FM for letting me in.

Keep the fires burning.

Toronto

Well I am here in Toronto and the city (I refuse to call it the big smoke because 1; it's a passé cliche for hicks and 2; you can't smoke on the patios here, so there is more smoke in the streets of Ottawa) is looking good. What the city planners were thinking when they decided to stick a highway next to the lake I am not sure - that will really set it off eh. Lets stick a slag heap on the nearest hill! Anywho, here I am and to assimilate into "Trrrrana" culture, last night I saw The Blue Jays play (that's baseball for those reading in Europe, baseball is like rounders for those in England - oh hell what do you care you've got enough sport right now).

Anyway, I am alive and well and the reconnaissance mission to start a new life has begun. I have to pop back to Ottawa for a couple of weeks in August to clear my house out and have a massive farewell shindig of some sort but alas, here we go. The wheels are turning, and it's going OK. Just got to get a place and a job. Ah fecking life.

The Never Hour (New music podcast)

I have been busy since travelling Africa a few months ago. I've been seeking a new life (which I still haven't quite sorted yet, to be honest) so I have been a distant young man, spending huge amounts of time looking at a screen in my Ottawa basement/dungeon. Meanwhile...

If you are interested in new music, you might want to pop over to theneverhour.com where I have put together a couple of podcasts of killer new music.

I'll be posting a non-music podcast here soon. Enjoy the sun x

The final part of the audio-diary through Africa. Vinney talks to seals in Namibia, then discovers how not to sand-board. Finally South Africa to see the beautiful Cape Town and the not-quite-as-beautiful Soweto. It's all over. What's next?

Vinney White in Africa - 8ish Countries, 2ish Months (Part Four)

015: Vinney White in Africa (Part Three)

Vinney White in Africa - 8ish Countries, 2ish Months (Part Three)
What's it like spending days with the same people, on a truck in Africa? How do the toilet breaks work? What are the police-stops like? Also we take a tour of a typical village in Malawi with Mel Gibson (really, we do). Guests; Fitz & Laura help me explain all.

013: Vinney White in Africa (Part 1)

Vinney White in Africa - 8ish Countries, 2ish Months (Part One)
From Kenya to Tanzania - I report from a campsite near a Massai village with my new friends. We talk about Massai culture. We visit a village full of excited kids surrounded by their mud huts - where a wife costs 10 cows. We are starting to bond well, and experience the madness of deepest Africa. I love this stuff.

Ottawa Airport

In Ottawa airport bar. 8 countries in the next few months. London for holidays then back to our homo-sapien roots across Africa (unless you're a creationist, in which case I hope you get a lovely new toy train for Christmas to push down the railroad of denial). I still love you Canada. Podcasts of the trip to come.

The Never Hour

When I worked for 'that radio station' I had a feature: The Never Hour.

Now, it's online monthly (if I'm not on the road) and available, for free.

It showcases new music.

It feels like a shot of tequila at a boring tupperware party; damn good and highly necessary. Then it'll come back and set your nipples on fire because it can. Try it.

This week, pop over to theneverhour.com for a great podcast.
